On the route
Jiankou is a rugged, unrestored section with steep approaches and loose stone. The route then reaches Mutianyu’s maintained Wall, giving experienced hikers a striking change in terrain and atmosphere.
Prepare for the day
Suitable for confident hikers with good balance. The approach and wild sections can be slippery; a guide and weather-based route decision are important.

Along the way
The places behind this itinerary
The route approaches Jiankou from Xizhazi village. A steep climb leads toward Zhengbeilou tower, where the reward is a broad view of the Wall running across the mountain ridges.
Jiankou’s unrestored ruins contrast with Mutianyu’s maintained brick paths and towers. At Mutianyu, guests may descend on foot or choose a locally available cable car or toboggan; any separate ticket should be confirmed.
